The Church of San Nicola in Montedoro is a small stop in Martina Franca old town, far removed from the scale of the Basilica and interesting precisely because of its intimate proportions. It stands in the Montedoro district and retains late-medieval features outside; the interior, which is almost always closed, contains paintings altered and layered over several centuries.

A layered history
From San Paolo dei Greci to San Nicola dei Poveri
According to the Municipality of Martina Franca, the site was occupied in the fourteenth century by the Church of San Paolo dei Greci, a name also used for the surrounding neighbourhood. That building fell into ruin in the sixteenth century and was rebuilt in the seventeenth.
The church was first known as San Nicola dei Poveri, reflecting the social-assistance work it carried out with the small hospital in Vico Cavour. The name San Nicola in Montedoro later prevailed: Montedoro identifies the district and recalls an old family that no longer exists.

The intersecting pitched roof is covered with local limestone chiancarelle, above which rises a single bell gable.
What the interior contains, when access is possible
The rectangular hall has been altered several times. Its stone altars date from the seventeenth century, while its paintings include work from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. Repainting, removal and surviving traces of preparatory drawings reveal a complex conservation history.
The central painting shows the Madonna delle Grazie with Saint Nicholas, Saint Benedict, Saint Scholastica and a female martyr, probably Saint Comasia. It was retouched in 1802 by Francesco Carella. Other walls retain, in varying conditions, subjects including the Pietà, Our Lady of the Rosary, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Francis of Paola.
This context helps visitors understand the building even when the door is closed. It should not, however, be taken as a guarantee that the interior will be open.

How to include San Nicola in a Martina Franca walk
Begin in the Baroque heart of the town between Piazza Plebiscito and the Basilica of San Martino, then gradually move away from the busiest squares towards Montedoro. San Nicola works best as a stop along the way rather than an isolated destination: look at its facade, its relationship with the houses and the scale of the neighbourhood.
