Autumn is a lovely time to slow down in the Itria Valley: temperatures are milder, villages are easier to explore at an unhurried pace, and every drive unfolds through trulli, olive groves and dry-stone walls. This guide outlines a weekend for two based in Martina Franca, balancing walks, local food and private time at the Suite.

Why visit the Itria Valley in autumn
From September to November, the landscape takes on a quieter character. The middle of the day is usually the most pleasant time for walking, while the evening lends itself to a relaxed dinner and a private wellness ritual back at the Suite.
The Itria Valley is not a single destination but a territory best understood in stages: Martina Franca’s Baroque architecture, Locorotondo’s cummerse, Cisternino’s narrow lanes and Alberobello’s trulli. Choose a small number of meaningful stops and leave space for spontaneous discoveries.
Suggested itinerary
A two-day weekend starting in Martina Franca
Day 1
Martina Franca, Locorotondo and Cisternino
Begin on foot in Martina Franca old town. Piazza Plebiscito, the Basilica of San Martino, arches and Baroque balconies are best enjoyed without a rigid schedule. When accessible, Palazzo Ducale adds a rewarding cultural stop before lunch.
In the afternoon, head to Locorotondo for a walk among whitewashed houses and the distinctive pitched-roof cummerse. Continue to Cisternino, where intimate lanes and the tradition of fornelli pronti, butcher shops that grill meat to order, make for a memorable food stop.
Return to Martina Franca before evening. The old town is easy to enjoy on foot, and the day can end in the privacy of the Suite’s exclusive-use wellness area.
Day 2
Alberobello in the morning, then one optional detour
Spend the first part of the day in Alberobello. An early arrival gives you more time to notice the differences between Rione Monti and Aia Piccola and to appreciate the dry-stone building tradition recognised by UNESCO.
After lunch, choose just one additional destination: Ostuni for the sweeping setting of the White City, or Ceglie Messapica for a finish centred on food and its historic quarter. For an even slower weekend, return directly to Martina Franca and save the other village for a future trip.
Match the stop to your pace
Three different experiences, not a checklist
01
Alberobello
The iconic choice for understanding trulli. Arrive early and include Aia Piccola, whose atmosphere remains more residential.
02
Ostuni
Ideal for travellers drawn to broad views and a striking walk through lanes, courtyards and whitewashed facades.
03
Ceglie Messapica
A rewarding detour for anyone who wants local cooking, small shops and a historic centre with a gentler rhythm.
Before you set out
Practical tips for an autumn weekend
- Getting around
- A car is useful between villages. Park outside the historic centres and continue on foot.
- What to bring
- Comfortable shoes, a light waterproof layer and a jacket for the cooler evening hours.
- What to check
- Museum, church and attraction hours may change outside peak season, so confirm them on official websites the day before.
- How much to plan
- Book only the experiences that matter most to you and leave at least one part of the day unscheduled.
The return is part of the journey
From the villages to private wellness for two
Suite San Martino is a private apartment for two in Martina Franca old town, not a public spa centre. The heated hydromassage pool, sauna, Turkish bath and sensory shower are reserved exclusively for guests staying in the Suite.
After a day exploring the villages, you can add an in-Suite massage or a private romantic dinner, subject to availability. Both are optional additions to the stay and should be arranged in advance.
